When people who have a shared interest in music get together, it’s inevitable that they start a band together. After all, what better way to show your appreciation for music? If you’ve been curious about starting a band, here’s a step-by-step guide on how to do so.

  1. Get a Group Together

You can’t have a band without bandmates, so the first thing you’re going to want to do is find a group of like-minded people who are willing to jam with you. Depending on the type of genre of music you want to play, you will need people who can play a variety of instruments including a guitar, drums, and bass. Of course, you’re going to need a singer too.

  1. Figure Out a Genre

Speaking of genres, one of the first things you should do when starting a band is figure out the genre of music that you want to play. This should be a group vote amongst you and the rest of your bandmates of course. If you simply can’t settle on one, you may want to consider starting your own genre of music!

  1. Find a Look

For your band to look cohesive, you should all agree on a style to wear. Having the right look is also your key into booking the right shows and getting to play at all the right places. Whether it’s leather pants or ripped jeans, your look is going to define you and your band.

  1. Look for a Place to Practice

You are obviously going to need to start practicing right away, but before you do you’ll need to find a space to do it in. Some good options are a garage, a bandmate’s living room, or if you’re lucky, you can book some studio time.

  1. Write Your First Song

Once you start writing songs, everything else will follow. You’ll be able to record it, play it at shows, and maybe even have your local radio station play it on your behalf.
